Pure Pilates is based on being able to combine a deep understanding of how the body works with the best exercises for the goal, which then must be taught in specific sequences which again must be founded on how the body functions, so that the client moves forward in his health with total efficiency.
The classic Joseph Pilates matwork sequence is set out in a specific sequence based on his outstanding intuition and body awareness, but today's Pilates teacher has even greater potential to get things right for the client because we know so very much more about how the body works than we did in Pilates' time.
It is up to a Pilates Instructor to train continuously to really understand how the body works from inside to out and then to use this knowledge to create great classes for the client.
Learning
Pilates exercises per se will work by default but due to the fact that every human's body is unique, eventually the client will reap huge dividends when he or she invests his/her money in a teacher who has a deep understanding of how the body works and can combine this with a lot of Pilates experience.
Thankfully the public is getting fed up of so called 'health professionals' whose training and knowledge is inadequate. In fairness, it costs a lot to keep training and although health is the most valued of assets, usually once its gone, the health and fitness industry is one of the most poorly paid in the country
Rosemary can fine tune any matwork exercise to ensure it works the body extraordinarily sensitively, with clarity and hugely beneficial results. Joseph Pilates called his matwork “The Method.” You only have to think of current fitness gurus, gymnasts, ballerinas, martial arts experts for proof that exercise which is free of machines produces some of the world’s fittest and cleverest bodies. Many people including top Pilates experts whose Pilates workouts are dominated by Pilates machine continue to get backache and others often find they are unable to keep up in a matwork class. Ultimate functional fitness needs the body to be free of machines, but Pilates machines are deeply clever too.
Pilates wanted everyone to be brilliant at matwork. He designed the machines out of frustration that often people were not fit enough to succeed at his matwork which is tough and leaves many sweating. The Body Control Pilates Association has broken down the classical matwork into exercises that achieve certain goals better than any machine and provide a superb way forward in fitness. Think of how incredibly strong a spider’s cobweb is compared to its body weight. Pilates fibres need the same finesse in training in order to produce an overall extremely functionally fit body. Thus matwork gets amazing results.
